Camera confidence is not the same as stage confidence
Plenty of good stage hosts freeze when the room becomes a lens and a countdown in an ear. I did it the other way round: television first, then the stage. Talking to a camera as though it is a person, taking direction while I speak, and reading a live room at the same time is the job description of a hybrid host, and it is the job I trained for.
It also means I am comfortable in a studio with a full gallery, or in a venue with a single camera and a laptop.

The interaction remote delegates actually want
Nobody at home wants to unmute. They will, however, type a question, back somebody else’s, vote in a poll and shout at a Higher or Lower card in their kitchen.
RoomReader and the games console run in a browser with nothing to download, which is the difference between an audience that takes part and an audience that has the tab open in the background.

What does a virtual event host do?
Everything a conference host does, to a camera: opens, links, introduces, moderates and keeps a remote audience with you. The difference is that a remote audience can leave without anybody noticing, so the pace, the interaction and the energy have to be deliberate.
How do you keep a hybrid audience engaged?
By treating the two audiences as one room. The games and the Q&A on RoomReader run for remote delegates and the hall at the same time, on the same leaderboard and the same screen, so nobody online feels like the overflow.

Why does a television background matter for hybrid?
Because a hybrid host is talking to a lens, an earpiece and a live room at the same time. That is a television skill, and I spent years presenting for Fox, Warner Bros, Universal and the BBC before I hosted my first conference.
Can we run the games for remote delegates?
Yes. They join in a browser, no app, and play the same round as the room. A virtual quiz with two hundred people at home is one of the best energisers there is.
